Last Night On looks back at the special relationship between the NFL and The Tonight Show ahead of the new season.

A change is coming to the country and it is coming fast. No, we’re not talking about an election. We’re talking about football season. And when it comes to football, nobody covers the NFL quite like The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

Recently it was announced that The Tonight Show would air on Sunday nights after five select Sunday Night Football games. NBC is hoping that the enormous NFL audience will stick around to watch Jimmy Fallon and help The Tonight Show close the ratings gap with The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

It helps that Fallon has already made himself pretty familiar with NFL fans. Fallon may not be as dedicated of a sports fan as other late night hosts like Jimmy Kimmel or David Spade. But Fallon’s strength has always been his ability to get along with every kind of person and appeal to a wide audience.

And the NFL brings with in a very, very wide audience from across the country. The Tonight Show is well aware of this and has been doing NFL-inspired bits and sketches for some time now. On top of that, Fallon has interviewed some of the biggest stars from the league like Patrick Mahones, Russell Wilson, and Eli Manning.
