Saturday Night Live celebrates the end of the ’90s with vintage sketches featuring Will Ferrell, Jimmy Fallon, and more.

Another week has come and gone and that means that another batch of vintage Saturday Night LIve sketches have come online. The latest group celebrates the end of the 1990s and the start for a cast that helped revived the show.

By 1995, several fan favorite cast members had left Saturday Night Live either by choice or by force. Phil Hartman, Mike Myers, and Dana Carvey all departed to turn their attention to movies. Pressure from NBC led producer Lorne Michaels to fire Chris Farley and Adam Sandler.

Those five names would rank high among a lot of fans’ favorite performers. It also means that a lot of of popular characters were no longer available. Saturday Night Live celebrated some of those recurring characters in a recent collection of vintage sketches.

So it was time for change as the show headed for the 2000s. Thankfully, the show already had just the man to lead it into its next chapter: Will Ferrell.

Ferrell joined the show in 1995, coming on in season 21. It was the final season for David Spade, the last link to the Farley-Sandler era. After that, it quickly became Ferrell’s show while Michaels added more and more talent around him.

Ana Gasteyer and Tracy Morgan joined the next year, followed by Jimmy Fallon in season 24 and Rachel Dratch and Maya Rudolph in season 25.

The ratings of the late ’90s and the critical response may not suggest it was a golden era of the show. It was also competing against itself in a way as the 1992-1993 season was one of it’s highest rated ever.

But looking back, some fans may not believe the show struggled when it had names like Will Ferrell and Jimmy Fallon. Check out these vintage sketches showcasing the two stars near the beginning of their Saturday Night Live careers.
