Seth Meyers revisits Trump’s broken promises to truckers
By Matt Moore
Seth Meyers looked at how President Donald Trump’s tax and tariff policies have hurt the trucking industry he promised to help.
With a different news story breaking just about every hour, it can be difficult to keep up on certain stories. That’s why Late Night with Seth Meyers came up with “The Check In,” a segment that lets Seth Meyers revisit a story that has been overshadowed or under-reported.
Tuesday night Meyers checked in on the country’s trucking industry. The multi-billion dollar industry employs a sizable percentage of Americans. It has also become a common political topic both for the blue-collar truckers and for the millionaire executives running the companies.
So it made sense that Donald Trump sought out the support of the trucking industry during his campaign and once in office. He promised more opportunities for truckers, better salaries, and lower taxes.
But when Seth Meyers checked in on how truckers have done during the Trump presidency, he found that things weren’t quite as promised. Watch Meyers break down the reality of Trump’s policies in “The Check In.”
Meyers shows how Trump played the part of a blue collar champion well. His “I Love Truck” button and posing inside a truck was somehow supposed to prove he cared about the truck drivers as opposed to the truck companies. Meyers calls it “transparent pondering” but it clearly works for President Trump.
Plenty of people warned that Trump’s tax cuts wouldn’t benefit the average American nearly as much as it would corporations and the wealthy. Meyers points out that this has come true for truckers who are now paying more in taxes than before. And the president’s love of tariffs has been well documented both by news outlets and by late night television.
Seeing Meyers talk about Trump and truckers reminds us of Saturday Night Live‘s cold open following the Oct. 2017 trucker rally. Fans will want to watch it again.
“The Check In” has become one of the best segments on Late Night with Seth Meyers. Fans will always tune in for “A Closer Look” and for good reason. But segments like this one let Seth Meyers remind viewers that there is more going on then just that day’s headline.
