Seth Meyers took a closer look at President Donald Trump’s ongoing attacks on four congresswomen.

Here at Last Night On we often point out how much material President Donald Trump provides late night shows. Every strange, offensive, or funny thing he says or does is usually followed by another and it is up to hosts and fans to keep up with it. But as Seth Meyers proved in Monday night’s “A Closer Look,” there is one thing Trump has done that isn’t getting pushed aside by the next controversy.

President Trump’s racist tweets targeting Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib, Ilhan Omar, and Ayanna Pressley dominated the news cycle. Fuel was added to the fire when Trump doubled-down on his attacks and then had the overwhelming support of Republicans.

Unlike other Trump stories, this one isn’t going away or at least isn’t being overshadowed by any other headlines. The president isn’t helping by continuing to reference the group of congresswomen, known collectively as “The Squad,” by calling them racist.

It is not uncommon for Late Night with Seth Meyers took have multiple segments of “A Closer Look” in a given week. What is uncommon is for Meyers to be using the segment to cover the same story over and over. But Trump left Meyers and the rest of Late Night with little choice.

Meyers starts off by recapping Trump’s history with racism since taking office. The president has been hesitant at best to distance himself from racists or to dispel any notion that he is a racist, according to Meyers. The stories Meyers references have all been covered in other editions of “A Closer Look” but it seems to have all been building to Trump turning on the four congresswomen of color.

In examining Trump’s ongoing Twitter attacks on the Squad, Meyers references a common criticism of the president. Many people have pointed out that he projects on to others, demonstrated here by calling the congresswomen weak, insecure, racist, and not very smart. These are all ways in which the president himself has been described and Meyers knows it better than anyone.

Meyers even references the exact point about this story: it is pushing everything else to page two. Special Counsel Robert Mueller is testifying on Wednesday and could reveal whether or not Trump should have been charged with a crime. Unsealed documents seem to confirm that Trump ordered his lawyer Michael Cohen to pay off Stormy Daniels. Both these stories have come after covering Trump’s attacks on the Squad.

This edition of “A Closer Look” was the closest we’ve seen Seth Meyers look defeated or exhausted with President Trump. It could be from covering the same story in multiple ways or from what the Late Night host sees as the never ending wave of corruption from the White House. Let’s hope he catches his second wind.
