Conan O’Brien swung into Comic-Con with a cold open inspired by Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

Comic-Con in San Diego officially kicked off on Wednesday. For the fifth year in a row, Conan O’Brien took his show to the event and for the fifth year in a row he delivered a perfect cold open.

O’Brien will be taking over Comic-Con for the next three days. His annual event is bigger than ever this year thanks to Team Coco’s expanding comedy empire. Conan will be filming there and O’Brien will interview the casts of It: Chapter 2Veronica Mars, and Carnival Row. Team Coco is also running a pop up comedy club featuring stand-up sessions, podcast recordings for “Inside Conan” and “3 Questions with Andy Richter.” There will also be giveaways, contests, and Q&As with writers for anyone who will be in San Diego.

To kick off ConanCon 2019, O’Brien and his team had to make a big splash. For inspiration, they turned to the Oscar-winning movie Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse for inspiration:

The show had a lot of options when it came to spoofing a popular television show or movie for this year’s cold open. They could have gone the Game of Thrones route again or maybe something inspired by Avengers: End Game. There are still two more episodes that could feature cold opens, so we’ll have to wait and see.

But Wednesday’s show combined one of the most popular movies in recent memory with O’Brien’s signature self-deprecating humor. Into the Spider-Verse was a huge success and O’Brien capitalized on it with this cold open.

It would have been nice to see some different Conan O’Brien’s from “other dimensions.” We could have seen Saturday Night Live writer Conan, ’90s Late Night Conan, and bearded Conan all teaming up. Maybe in a follow up fans will be introduced to the Conan-Verse.
