Donald Glover on The Lion King, Beyonce, and how he spent all his money
By Matt Moore
Donald Glover sat down with Jimmy Kimmel to talk about his personal life and everything going on in his busy career.
With someone as talented as Donald Glover, you’d expect there to be a lot to cover in a single interview. That was certainly the case on Jimmy Kimmel Live! where the actor/comedian/writer/rapper talked about nearly every topic imaginable.
Glover is out promoting his role as Simba in Disney’s The Lion King. The movie is another highlight in Glover’s career that has been praised in recent years for his role in Solo: A Star Wars Story, his song This Is America, and his television series Atlanta.
So with all that going on, Jimmy Kimmel knew that he would have a lot to go over when Glover was on Tuesday night’s show. Glover did not disappoint, showing up in costume and providing an entertaining interview.
Disney has been taking an interesting approach to the “live action” versions of its animated classics. Some, like Aladdin or The Little Mermaid, feature casts comprised mostly of unknown actors and actresses. But that is not the case with The Lion King cast led by Donald Glover and Beyonce.
Beyonce is not only one of the most popular celebrities on the planet but one of the most popular topics in late night. Any time her name is brought up, hosts like Jimmy Kimmel seem curious to know more about her and the experiences of those who meet her. It sounds as if Glover had a predictable reaction of being intimated/nervous/excited about meeting Beyonce but still not eager to sing in the same room.
Glover gave an update on his Childish Gambino career as well. He’s off to Australia to make up tour dates that were cancelled after he broke his foot. He didn’t exactly deny that his time as Childish Gambino was coming to an end but that doesn’t necessarily mean he’s done with music. Stay tuned.
Kimmel also asked Glover about his experience writing on 30 Rock while still in college and working with Tracy Morgan. The best part about the discussion however was Glover revealing what he was spending all his money on while working for NBC. Most college kids and candy addicts probably approve of Glover buying up all the Gushers he could.
The Lion King hits theaters on July 18. The movie will continue to take over Jimmy Kimmel Live! this week. Seth Rogen and director Jon Favreau will be guests later in the week. Keep checking Last Nigh On for all the highlights.
