Liam Cunningham brought the Game of Thrones coffee cup to Conan
By Matt Moore
Game of Thrones star Liam Cunningham had a special gift for Conan O’Brien straight from the set of the show.
Props are an important part of any television show. They are especially important for the fantasy world of Game of Thrones. But the most recent episode revealed that even after eight seasons, mistakes can still be made.
Fans of the show noticed that one scene in Winterfell featured what looked like a Starbucks coffee cup on the table in front of Daenerys. HBO acknowledged the mistake and late night hosts like Jimmy Kimmel and Stephen Colbert had some fun with it.
The cup is now arguably the most famous (or infamous) “prop” from the show. So Conan O’Brien should consider himself luck when Game of Thrones actor Liam Cunningham, AKA Ser Davos Seaworth, brought a special gift to his Conan appearance.
It was a good sign that HBO was able to have some fun with the latte mistake. It’s an even better sign that actors from the show like Cunningham also aren’t taking things too seriously. As he said, it looks like the show will survive the error and be just fine with only two episodes left.
We also learn that Cunningham is a big fan of props in general. He took a much different approach to collecting mementos than his co-star Isaac Hempstead Wright, who plays Bran Stark, the Three-Eyed Raven:
In fairness, Bran didn’t have quite the same accessories and personal items to choose from as Ser Davos. But it makes sense that the actor who played a notorious smuggler was able to get more than his fair share of treasures from the set.
There are only two episodes of Game of Thrones left. You can bet that HBO has rewatched both episodes to avoid another coffee cup mistake. And with more of the cast slated to appear on late night shows, we probably haven’t heard the last of props going missing from the set.
