By Matt Moore
Star Wars fans around the world looking to celebrate May the Fourth need to watch these Saturday Night Live sketches.
There aren’t too many film franchises that have their own special holiday. Then again, there aren’t too many film franchises quite like Star Wars. A worldwide cultural phenomenon certainly deserves its own day.
May 4 being “Star Wars Day” began as an official celebration back in 2011 and was first recognized by Disney in 2013 after purchasing Lucasfilm in 2012. Fans have been using the date as their own unofficial day of fun for years prior to that.
Anything in pop culture as big as this is sure to get the attention of Saturday Night Live. The two have had a strong connection dating back to the start of each institution. Saturday Night Live debuted in 1975 and in 1977 Star Wars hit theaters.
So with over 40 years of SNL sketches and Star Wars mania, it is no surprise that the two have crossed over more than a few times. Actors and actresses from the films have hosted and poked fun of their characters. SNL cast members have used their fandom to spoof the universe created by George Lucas.
From the debut of Star Wars to the trailer for Rise of Skywalker, the films have meant so much to so many people. The movies are responsible for a lot of happy memories for fans, just like SNL. So enjoy these classic sketches and may the Force be with you!
