‘A Closer Look’ at Trump’s call to Fox News and Democrats’ call for impeachment
By Matt Moore
Seth Meyers took a closer look at President Trump’s response to possible impeachment.
Late Night with Seth Meyers returned from a one week hiatus on Monday. A new show meant a new chance for Meyers to take a closer look at the latest reaction from President Donald Trump to the Russia investigation.
Typically when President Trump wants to get a specific message out, he turns to Twitter. But when things are really serious he goes to his friends at Fox News. The fallout of the Mueller investigation and suggestions that some Democrats are considering impeachment provided the president with more than enough motivation to call into the cable network.
We all know how much fun late night hosts like Seth Meyers have when Trump goes on a Twitter tirade. So when he takes things to the Fox News level, they really start to pay attention at places like Late Night. President Trump’s phone call to Fox News was the perfect starting point for last night’s “A Closer Look.”
Meyers highlights the end of the conversation during which President Trump rambled on while Fox host Maria Bartiromo clearly wants hang up on him. The president rambling is a popular topic of ridicule on Late Night and this only adds to the collection of clips Meyers is assembling.
Even more of a favorite subject for Meyers is when Trump contradicts himself or is hypocritical. The late night hosts points this out by showing Trump claiming the Russia investigation was an attempted coup by traitors. Next we see Trump celebrating Robert E. Lee, noted leader of a failed coup led by traitors.
Meyers wraps up the segment by questioning why Trump and his supporters are so convinced that the president has been cleared by the Mueller report. It’s clear that the report leaves it up to Congress on how to proceed. And with some Democrats already calling for impeachment, it is only a matter of time before Trump dials up Fox News again.
It is clear that the finding in the Mueller report will continue to dominate the news and influence the 2020 election. It is also clear that President Trump will say anything to defend himself and influence more of “A Closer Look” from Seth Meyers.
