Real Time with Bill Maher preview for April 12, 2019
By Matt Moore
Bill Maher welcomes a humorist, political strategist, and pundits to an all new Real Time tonight.
Both familiar faces and newcomers will be on tonight’s all new episode of Real Time with Bill Maher. As always, there is plenty to talk about so fans should be in for another lively discussion led by Bill Maher.
Late night has been following along with news stories all week. Particular attention has been given to President Trump’s re-energized focus on immigration. Late Night with Seth Meyers has been especially critical of the president for both ignoring the law and considering himself above any legal consequences.
On The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the immigration issue was also a major focus. Trump’s attempt to blame family separations at the border on President Barack Obama was challenged by Stephen Colbert.
The fight over releasing the Mueller report to Congress and the public is ongoing as well. These issues being covered across late night shows can give us some hint of what Real Time with Bill Maher will look at tonight. Also cluing us in is the night’s lineup of guests.
Top-of-show
Leading things off is an interview with attorney and author Seth Abramson. It will be his first appearance on Real Time.
Abramson has a very active and very informative Twitter feed that aims to provide context to everything related to the Russia investigation. He is also the author of 2018’s Proof of Collusion: How Trump Betrayed America and 2019’s Proof of Conspiracy: How Trump’s International Collusion Threatens American Democracy.
Abramson has been critical of how the Mueller report has been covered in the press. Expect him to bring a little more nuance to the discussion on Real Time and offer some clarity on where things stand today.
Mid-show interview
Maher welcomes back humorist and author Dave Barry for the mid-show interview. Barry was last on the show in 2015.
Barry had a popular humor column that ran from 1983 to 2005. Since then he’s published additional works of humor, satire, and parody.
Earlier this month Barry published his book Lessons From Lucy: The Simple Joys of an Old, Happy Dog. The book offers the 71-year-old Barry’s thoughts on how to age gracefully while drawing inspiration from his dog Lucy.
The panel
Political strategist and pollster Cornell Belcher is on the panel. He is the founder of the polling firm Brilliant Corners Research & Strategies that helped provide insight to Barack Obama’s campaigns in 2008 and 2012.
Wendy Sherman, a counselor at the business strategy firm Albright Stonebridge Group, is also on the panel. She served in President Barack Obama’s cabinet first as Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs and then as acting Deputy Secretary of State.
Rounding out the panel is pundit and author Matt Welch. He serves as the editor of the Libertarian magazine Reason. In recent days, he has been commenting on the arrest of Wikileaks founder Julian Assange.
Real Time with Bill Maher airs live tonight, April 12, at 10:00 PM on HBO. Stay up to date with the show by following along on Twitter and submit any questions you have for the panel. Enjoy the show and keep checking Last Night On for updates.
