The Walking Dead star Danai Gurira revealed what made her bring out her inner Michonne while in Los Angeles.
Playing the same character for seven years is bound to have an effect on any actor or actress. When playing a sword-carrying survivor of the zombie apocalypse like Danai Gurira on The Walking Dead, those effects can be pretty out of the ordinary.
Gurira has played fan-favorite Michonne in over 80 episodes of AMC’s The Walking Dead. Her future on the show may in some doubt. But even if Gurira leaves it doesn’t sound like Michonne is going to leave the actress any time soon.
Appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Tuesday night as part of Avengers week, Gurira dodged spoiler questions about both Avengers: Endgame and The Walking Dead. Kimmel asked how fans react to Gurira compared to their expectations as seeing her as Michonne. The actress admitted she isn’t the tough, serious type except in very specific situations. That’s when eight years of Michonne bubbles to the surface:
All that sword training sounds like it has paid off for Gurira. She can walk her dog late at night knowing that if any coyotes come down from the Los Angeles hills then she can protect the dog and herself.
It may come at the cost of her dog making any friends and Gurira getting strange looks from her fellow dogwalkers. But it is probably a small price to pay in exchange for the sense of security that comes with walking around with a practice sword.
I can imagine that seeing Danai Gurira walking around with a sword in her hand would be like seeing Mark Hamill walking around with a lightsaber or seeing Kit Harington in a giant fur coat carrying Longclaw.
You can see Danai Gurira reprise her role as Okoye in Avengers: Endgame on April 26. Based on the popularity of her character and Black Panther, Gurira is in for a long run as the Dora Milaje general. The coyotes of Los Angeles may never be safe with Gurira in town.
