Mindy Kaling releases the trailer for her movie Late Night
By Matt Moore
Mindy Kaling’s movie Late Night is already in the record books and the trailer shows why.
Typically it is the trailer that builds hype for a movie after things like the writer, director, and cast are announced. But for Late Night, the movie written by and starring Mindy Kaling, anticipation grew once the movie found its way into the record books.
The film centers on Kaling as the lone female writer on the staff of a struggling late night show hosted by Emma Thompson’s character. Kaling drew on her experiences as writer for The Office and likely also took inspiration from her time as an intern for Late Night with Conan O’Brien and her numerous guest spots on late night shows.
Late Night has received extra attention not only because of the talented Kaling and the cast and crew assembled but for its record-setting sale at the Sundance Film Festival. Amazon Studios paid a never-before-seen price of $13 million for U.S. distribution rights.
Kaling’s movie received plenty of praise at Sundance. The comedy was especially celebrated for being female-focused. It’s no coincidence that the fictional show Kaling’s character Molly gets hired for is hosted by a woman. Add to that female director Nisha Ganatara and it’s easy to see why.
Now we have our first look at the movie set to be released in June. Judging by the trailer, it looks like Amazon has made a good investment.
It looks like Late Night is perfect for Mindy Kaling fans, whether they came to her through The Office, The Mindy Project, her books, or all the above. There also seems to be a 30 Rock-esque vibe to how Kaling portrays the writers’ room.
Mindy Kaling has proven herself as a comedy writer. Writing for herself will only amplify that talent along with help from co-star Emma Thompson and director Nisha Ganatara. It will be especially fun to watch Kaling promote Late Night on…late night. Last Night On will have it all covered!
