Last Week Tonight with John Oliver busts predatory psychics
By Matt Moore
John Oliver took a closer look at psychics and how they can scam people out of millions of dollars.
Have you had a feeling that something has been missing from your life recently? Perhaps something you loved has been gone for what seems like months. Well don’t worry because that should all go away now because Last Week Tonight with John Oliver is back.
It doesn’t take psychic powers to come to that conclusion. Instead, it just takes knowing about the massive audience John Oliver has built up in just a short amount of time with Last Week Tonight. Between the airing on HBO and clips posted to YouTube, the show is seen by millions each week.
Those millions of people probably have been feeling a bit abandoned since the end of November. That was when Last Week Tonight had its season five finale.
Since then, fans have had to turn to shows like The Daily Show, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and Late Night with Seth Meyers as they awaited Oliver’s return. He did just that last week with a season six premiere that looked at the Brexit situation.
On last night’s show, Oliver once again set himself apart from the rest of late night. Last Week Tonight always hits the mark but it is when the show looks at a seeming random topic that it proves just how special of an ability it has. So it is fitting that Oliver deconstructing the shady world of psychics:
Plenty of shows have made fun of psychics or used them for laughs. Saturday Night Live is just one example. That show has had some fun with Long Island Medium in the past. But Oliver goes a bit deeper as he typically does on his show.
These clips from Last Week Tonight always provide some insight that the public usually has no idea about. It shows just how much research Oliver and company do for what is ultimately still a comedy show.
Chances are that after watching this clip, you’ll look at those reality television shows about mediums and psychics a bit differently. Like Oliver says, if you believe those individuals actually have a special ability then there is no used in convincing you otherwise. But for the rest of us, we get an idea of just how easy it can be for someone grieving to be taken advantage of by “psychics.”
And just like every other clip, no Last Week Tonight monologue would be complete without someone or something else being caught in the crossfire. This week it was disgraced Today anchor Matt Lauer. Oliver makes psychics look really bad but it is nothing compared to what he had to say about Lauer.
As you might imagine (or could tell if you’re psychic), this clip is already going viral. Last week’s video on Brexit went over nine million views on YouTube and this one is trending in that direction at well. It proves that people have been eager to hear from John Oliver again and that Last Week Tonight is ready to deliver week after week.
