Conan O’Brien and Nick Kroll’s sex education class goes wrong
By Matt Moore
Conan O’Brien and Nick Kroll tried to bring some of their personal experiences to a sex ed class.
A high school sex ed class can be a pretty awkward and uncomfortable experience for a lot of students. But a sex ed class taught by Conan O’Brien and Nick Kroll? That sounds a little more entertaining. Educational? Not so much.
Earlier this week we told you to keep an eye out for Nick Kroll’s appearance on Conan. The comedian and actor has made a handful of successful and hilarious visits to the late night show. Conan O’Brien clearly appreciate’s Kroll’s sense of humor and it was a no-brainer for Kroll to be among the first guests on the revamped Conan.
Kroll’s animated series Big Mouth on Netflix has released two seasons so far and will drop a Valentine’s Day special. The comedy takes a look at human sexuality and the challenges of puberty so it was a perfect fit for Kroll to join O’Brien in teaching a California sex ed class.
We certainly saw a lot more “wrongs” than “rights” when it came to fact checking Mr. O’Brien and Mr. Kroll’s class. What Conan didn’t know about anatomy he made up for by giving students a lesson on the sex life of a married man over 50. Perhaps it will be a valuable lesson for Conor, the son he never he knew he had.
This remote piece had a lot of the qualities that help O’Brien be at his best. He’s allowed to improvise. He’s covering a very specific topic that allows for awkward exchanges. On top of it, he’s aided by a talented comedian for an audience that is at times less than amused.
The clip also gives us more of an idea about the direction of Conan n 2019. Pre-taped segments are set to be a big part of the show moving forward. Rather than simply interview a guest like Nick Kroll, O’Brien can do some actual comedy with him. These type of videos have always been a strength of O’Brien and it’s clear they will only get better with a renewed energy and focus at the show.
The students in this class got a once in a lifetime experience by having Conan O’Brien and Nick Kroll teach them about sex and the human body. But just to be safe, they may want to experience the class again with more qualified teachers. O’Brien can be seen at his day (or night?) job hosting Conan weeknights on TBS.
