Seth Meyers examines the consequences of the ongoing government shutdown and previews President Trump’s primetime address.
Like most late night hosts, Seth Meyers returned to work last night after a holiday break. Late Night picked up where it left off by focusing on the headlines coming out of President Trump’s White House. That meant it was time for Meyers to take a closer look at the government shutdown.
The shutdown is obviously the biggest story in the country right now. Stephen Colbert made sure to open The Late Show by giving his take on Trump’s motivation for not budging when it comes to funding his border wall.
Seth Meyers takes a similar approach to Colbert when it comes to calling out President Trump on his show. Meyers constantly points out lies and calls them just that. We’ve seen it time and time again in each segment of “A Closer Look.”
So it wasn’t surprising to hear Meyers say that tonight’s presidential address will just be a chance for Trump to repeat the same lies he has been telling about border security and his plans for a border wall/fence/steel slats.
Meyers breaks down Trump’s ramblings and statements in his trademark sense of humor, punctuated by some pretty hilarious comparisons. For Meyers, Trump sounds like everything from a coworker trying to retell a dream to a gym teacher covering a social studies class. All this is Meyers way of pointing out that Trump is in over his head but desperate to convince everyone that isn’t the case.
Considering Meyers’s opinion on the president, he isn’t exactly thrilled at the idea of Trump speaking to the nation about the apparent humanitarian and national security crisis going on at the border. The idea that networks shouldn’t broadcast the president’s address has been suggested by others. But that isn’t going to help allegations of “fake news” and bias. Instead, it’s best to let Trump speak and then provide some fact-checking.
Late night shows have become a place for fact-checking in the Trump era. Whereas some media outlets shy away from calling anything “lies,” hosts like Seth Meyers are free to call things as they see them. We can expect to see more from “A Closer Look” segments in 2019 and Meyers will surely have a take on tonight’s address. Check back in with Last Night On for all the coverage.
