The Daily Show presents its year in review for 2018
By Matt Moore
With so many headlines sounding made up, The Daily Show with Trevor Noah did its best to make sense of it all in 2018.
We have finally made it to the end of 2018. It certainly felt like a long 12 months when you considered the constant barrage of headlines and news cycles we went through. But a crazy year like 2018 is good for business if you’re in the same business as The Daily Show with Trevor Noah.
Covering all the news related to President Donald Trump, his administration, and the investigations surrounding them paid off for the show. Ratings were consistently strong throughout the year as audiences tuned in to hear Trevor Noah’s take on everything. Correspondents like Roy Wood, Jr., Ronny Chieng, and Desi Lydic also helped the show grow in 2018.
To celebrate the end of 2018 and another season of The Daily Show, Trevor Noah introduced a look back at some of the show’s favorite stories of the year. Not surprisingly, it featured a heavy dose of President Trump and just how odd things are with him in the White House.
These clips and highlight packages are great for two reasons. One, as Noah points out, they help remind us of things we probably forgot all about. Stories bounce in and out of the headlines so quickly it can be hard to keep track of what happened this year, never mind this month.
Second, it shows just how sharp Trevor Noah and the rest of The Daily Show writers were this year. In a crowded late night field, it can be hard to develop a unique voice or perspective when every late night host is trying to land the best punchline at Trump’s expense. But nobody in late night has a perspective like Noah or the format of The Daily Show.
2019 will be even crazier than 2018 by all accounts. The news out of the White House isn’t slowing down nor is the political rhetoric and divisiveness around the country. If that sounds exhausting already, just be thankful we have The Daily Show with Trevor Noah to provide some sense and some laughs along the way.
