The best of Real Time with Bill Maher season 16, part two
By Matt Moore
New Rule: Trump is above the law, May 18
This “New Rule” segment came from an early spring episode of Real Time in which things looked a little brighter for President Trump and his cabinet. Little did he or Bill Maher know at the time just how quickly things would start to unravel. Maybe knowing how intense the scrutiny could get, Trump wouldn’t be so eager to be “president for life.”
This segment is an example of what makes Maher so great and such a different voice than so many others trying to do what he does. Maher demonstrates his realist approach by saying outright that Trump is above the law. It certainly wasn’t what a lot of liberals wanted to hear when they tuned into HBO. But Maher points out that there won’t be any perp walk of Trump coming out of the White House.
Maher expertly points out the issues with everything from Paul Ryan’s leadership, the incompetence of Trump’s cabinet, and the systems in place to regulate the president. But he does it in a way that is realistic and not just meant to get cheap applause or make his liberal audience feel better.
It could be part of the reason why Bill Maher isn’t for everyone. But it’s also more indicative of why he’s been on television for so long. For why Real Time just wrapped up its 16th season and is ready for a hotly anticipated 17th come January. Last Night On certainly can’t wait, how about you?
