Claire Foy is ready and worry-free heading into Saturday Night Live
By Matt Moore
Claire Foy may be hosting Saturday Night Live for the first time but the actress says she’s not nervous at all.
This season of Saturday Night Live has been unpredictable. It’s been hard to predict how the show will perform from week to week. Some surprising faces have popped up in cameos, beginning with Matt Damon in the season’s opener. There have also been some surprising choices for hosts. Claire Foy is one example.
The British actress became well-known to American audiences with her critically-acclaimed role as Queen Elizabeth on the Netflix series The Crown. She has followed that up with big movies in 2018 like First Man and The Girl in the Spider’s Web. None of these roles call for comedic abilities or allow for much silliness.
One would expect that to lead to nervousness when preparing to host Saturday Night Live. It will likely be a big episode coming off the Thanksgiving week and during a week in which there was plenty to talk about in the news. But as Foy told Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show, she is sleeping soundly and feels at ease.
The honesty from Foy here is rare and refreshing. Most first-time hosts mention how nervous they are about being in the wild world of Saturday Night Live regardless of how much experience they have in performing. It sounds like Foy’s attitude is that if she can perform on stage as well as portray the queen and Lisbeth Salander, how nerve-racking can it be on SNL?
And it’s not like Foy has never demonstrated her sense of humor or willingness to step out from expectations. In the very same Tonight Show appearance, she rapped “Rapper’s Delight” on the spot.
We’ll see if Claire Foy has reason or not to be so relaxed tomorrow. Saturday Night Live airs on NBC at 11:30 ET on Dec. 1. Last Night On will have a preview of Foy’s episode before that. Then check back in to get a breakdown of all the highlights.
