New Rule: Dear Roseanne, April 28

Bill Maher provided a slight tweak to the “New Rule” segment in April. Rather than try to set a new law, he offered an open letter to Roseanne about her political views. Those views and Roseann’s outspokenness cost her her television series Roseanne.

Maher did a nice job of building up Roseanne and thanking her for years of support dating back to Maher’s old show Politically Incorrect. It’s not surprising that Maher is friends with someone like Roseanne, considering she demonstrated kindness and loyalty to him while never being shy about speaking her mind.

But, as Maher said, it’s now 2018 and we have to talk about Trump. That was another theme of season 16. All roads lead back to Trump and how he has influenced so much of the conversation. It does give the Real Time host the chance to engage in a favorite pastime of calling out hypocrites.

A point that cannot be stressed enough is just how false the claim that Trump cares about the “little guy” truly has become. No part of his life leading up to the White House has at all been concerned with those outside of his tax bracket. The idea that Roseanne or anyone else believes Trump on this issue is comical to Maher, if not infuriating.

It’s nice of Maher to remind Roseanne that she is in fact a socialist. Like Trump, she may need some assistance in recalling what she has said in the past or where her political views stand. What a great friend Bill Maher must be to have!
