After another member of President Trump’s administration bites the dust, Late Show host Stephen Colbert offered his fond farewell to former Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

Jeff Sessions was officially fired via forced resignation yesterday thereby ending his tenure in President Trump’s cabinet. Not since Stephen Colbert gave us the “Hungry for Power Games” have we seen so many politicians dropping left and right. Colbert was eager to send off Sessions during last night’s Late Show.

Sessions had become a favorite target of Colbert as well as the rest of late night. On Saturday Night Live he’s been portrayed by Kate McKinnon as a goofy, Forest Gump-esque Southerner. Colbert also plays up Sessions as an old-timey Southern. This doesn’t help criticism that much of late night is run by New York, coastal-elite types. But then again, President Trump is in that category too and seemingly has a similar view of Sessions.

If not using Sessions’ Southerness against him then Colbert is quick to point out the former Attorney General’s likeness to an elf. Colbert is of course an expert on such creatures as he’s demonstrated via his Lord of the Rings knowledge. But it was a much different type of elf that Colbert used when waving goodbye to Sessions.

Colbert doesn’t seem too broken up about Sessions’ departure. Instead he saved the crushing for Cookie Jeff Sessions. Many have seen this move coming after Trump’s relentless bullying campaign made it clear that the one-time Alabama senator was on the way out. But Colbert is also losing one of his favorite targets in the Trump administration.

The Late Show has gone after Sessions for his stance against marijuana, the family separation policy, and his apparently foggy memory. Few others in Trump’s cabinet could be counted on to make public statements that provided Colbert with such golden material for his monologues.

But just as quickly as the comedy gods can take something away they can just as quickly give something back. And for Colbert, that gift is in the former of acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker. Bad for the country? Possibly. Good for Colbert? Absolutely. Stay tuned to Last Night On as we watch Colbert set his sights on a new comedy treat.
