Trevor Noah says don’t fear Trump’s threats to birthright citizenship
By Matt Moore
Just days away from the midterm elections, President Donald Trump indicated plans to end birthright citizenship. But the Daily Show’s Trevor Noah says it’s nothing to worry about.
Fear seems to have developer a larger role in politics in the U.S. We are constantly told what to be fearful of if candidate X is elected or if this party pushes through a certain bill. And nobody likes to use that fear mongering tactic than President Trump. But Trevor Noah isn’t scared of everything.
It was just recently that Trump warned us about the caravan of violent thugs and gang members coming towards the border. But some of his supporters said it was full of sickly individuals who could spread disease across the country. The contradiction didn’t go unnoticed by late night.
The latest scary proclamation from the president is an end to birthright citizenship. That right is covered by the 14th Amendment and extends to all persons born or naturalized in the United States. Trump finds this notion ridiculous and said he would end it with an executive order.
The motivation behind such a measure from Trump is part of his immigration stance. He doesn’t want illegal immigrants crossing the borders and having children that then get automatic U.S. citizenship. But Daily Show host Trevor Noah had something to say about that:
As much as the president may want to use one of his magic executive orders, he can’t do that to change the Constitution. It’s not surprising that Trump doesn’t comprehend this considering his aides tried to teach him the Constitution while Trump was a candidate. He didn’t take to the lessons very well.
When one of Trump’s harshest critics like Trevor Noah is dismissive of something like this, then you really know it’s not worth worrying about. That is confirmed even more so when people on Fox News and Speaker Paul Ryan don’t even try to spin it.
There is something to this that Noah doesn’t really hit on. Even if Trump doesn’t change anything about birthright citizenship, the fact that he is threatening to do so is enough for his base. The president is the leader of the Republican Party and Republicans need all the support they can get in the midterms to hold onto power.
Yes, Trevor Noah is right that Trump’s claim that he will overturn the 14th Amendment with an executive order is nothing to fear. But what should be a little scary is thinking about all the people who agree with him and think voting in Republicans will make it happen. Maybe the entire country could use a refresher course on the Constitution.
