Bill Burr explained to Jimmy Kimmel how he avoided a fight at Dodger Stadium during the World Series and offered some advice on how anyone can do it.

Bill Burr is one of the best guests in late night. The comedian has a unique perspective on the world and has never been shy about sharing his thoughts. Fans of his “Monday Morning Podcast,” stand-up, and Netflix series F is For Family  know this all too well.

Burr is also a passionate sports fan. A Massachusetts native, he routinely talks about Boston sports on his podcast and on stage. So being a Boston sports fan and someone unafraid to speak his mind can make for an entertaining, and at times dangerous, combination.

He explained just how during his appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! by recapping his time watching his Red Sox take on the Los Angeles Dodgers during the World Series. Burr wasn’t down at field level like Kimmel was with Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. Instead, he was back with what he calls “the real people.”

Burr offers a perfect explanation of what it’s like to be a visiting fan in the upper decks. It can be especially worse if your team is winning the game or the series like the Red Sox were doing. Losing fans are much worse to deal with than winning ones. The fact that this Dodgers fan was looking for a fight with Burr while sitting with his wife and kids suggests he’s been thrown out of a stadium or two.

If you find yourself in a similar situation, you can try a couple of Burr’s proven methods of deescalation. Both demonstrate Burr’s sense of humor as comedian some 20-plus years into his career.

First there is the “ladies, ladies,” line which can get a laugh like Burr did. But there is also the chance things get worse depending on who you’re dealing with. The second strategy requires a bit more analysis and projection. Those familiar with Burr’s material know that loves making fun of all races and playing off stereotypes. So keep in mind the conversion rate of Irish to Mexican anger if you’re in a situation like Burr’s.
