Harry Carey’s space adventure

It is nearly impossible to pick out just one baseball sketch from the history of Saturday Night Live. For 44 seasons, the show has been pumping out sketches about America’s past time. Players like Derek Jeter, Nomar Garciaparra, and Jose Altuve have all show up at one time or another.

In recent history, we could focus on Kenan Thompson’s Weekend Update bits featuring Red Sox legend David Ortiz. “Ortiz” has shared his post-retirement plans and endorsement ideas a few different times in what has been a favorite sketch for Thompson and Weekend Update host Colin Jost.

But where Saturday Night Live is at it’s best is when sketches are only slightly connected to baseball. Examples include Yankee wives with Jeter or Will Ferrell imploring a Little League player to “get on the bag.”

And there is no better example of this than Ferrell’s impression of long time Chicago Cubs announcer Harry Carey. Ferrell’s SNL audition featured Carey at a play reading so it was clear the comedian had big ideas for Carey sketches. It hit a high point with “Space, the Infinite Frontier.” The sketch is one of the best of Ferrell’s career and provided audiences with quotes that are still thrown around today.
