Stephen Colbert saves baseball

It’s not all that often that Stephen Colbert gets out to do remote pieces. But from this July 2018 episode of the Late Show With Stephen Colbert we see some of the comedic prowess that made him a legend on The Daily Show.

Ideas for modernizing baseball have been coming out more and more over the past decade. Television ratings have declined and participation among younger players has been trending in the wrong direction. Things like a pitch clock and limited stoppages in play have been suggested for a game that has been largely played the same way since the 1800s.

Colbert’s ideas are, obviously, absurd. But they do a well enough job of satirizing attempts to make the game more “appealing” or entertaining to a younger generation. But is that really necessary? It’s baseball. This is how it’s played, this is how long it takes to get through it. Not everything has to be a pre-packaged product.

The video also provides what may be the New York Mets’ best performances of 2018. The team didn’t have many other positive productions other than the Late Show bit. The Mets finished the season at 77-85 with a home record below .500, so maybe fans would like to see them off the field as fast as possible.
