Donald Trump vs. the free press – Stephen Colbert weighs in
By Jeremy Dick
The Late Show host Stephen Colbert is responding to President Donald Trump attacking the free press while also saying he is a big supporter of it.
Sometimes it’s really hard to understand what the president is trying to convey.
Last night on The Late Show, host Stephen Colbert brought up Donald Trump’s waged war on the press. As we all know, Trump labels any news report that criticizes him or his policies in any way as “fake news.” Furthermore, the president has gone on to declare the press the “enemy of the people,” which is certainly a bit concerning for the journalists out there to hear.
As Colbert explains, Trump is getting a lot of heat for going off on the press, prompting him to defend himself on Twitter. “There is nothing that I would want more for our Country than true FREEDOM OF THE PRESS,” Trump said on Twitter, before saying how much of it is fake news with a political agenda. Hilariously and ironically, Trump signs off the tweet with the phrase, “Honesty wins!”
“It’s true, honesty wins, but lying will get you the electoral college,” Colbert quips. It’s funny how the president has been caught in so many lies already, but declares anything bad said about him to be fake news. For those who don’t support the president, they’re hoping that honesty does in fact win, because that would mean Trump would be exposed and finally have to own up to his falsehoods.
You can watch Colbert say it best in the YouTube video clip below.
If Trump had his way, there wouldn’t be any Colbert on late night television. You’ve gotta love the free press that we have, even if the president doesn’t. Watch The Late Show with Stephen Colbert when it airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. EST on CBS.
