Bill Maher supports Bernie Sanders running again in 2020
By Jeremy Dick
Bernie Sanders isn’t saying if he’ll run for president again in 2020, but Bill Maher tells the Senator that if he chooses to run, he’s with him.
Bill Maher is still feeling the Bern…
Last night on Real Time with Bill Maher, Maher invited former presidential candidate Bernie Sanders onto the show for an interview. Despite the grassroots movement supporting his candidacy, Sanders ultimately didn’t win the nod for the Democratic seat. We all know what would happen next, with Hillary Clinton losing to Donald Trump in the election, putting the United States of America into what many would say is a hard place to be.
Noting Sanders’ popularity, Maher notes that the crowd seems to want him to run again. Though he doesn’t clarify if he will, Sanders stresses that the 2020 election is perhaps the most important election of all time. Sanders explains how Trump is a “pathological liar” who undermines American democracy, and it’s very important to elect him out of office before he can do even more damage to the country.
Sanders and Maher discuss Trump’s broken promises to the American people, including his promise to make sure everybody had healthcare. “When does the cult of personality wear away in favor of ‘Wait, you’re actually hurting me?’” Maher asks, questioning why so many people still can’t see it yet. Although the problem doesn’t entirely lie with Trump, according to Sanders.
“It’s not that Trump won, it’s the Democrats lost,” Sanders says of the 2016 election. Sanders asserts that the Democratic party has been “dominated by wealthy campaign contributors” for far too long. To take on the Republican party in 2020, Sanders insists Democrats need to go into “Trump country” and speak to those in desperation. For what it’s worth – Maher tells Bernie that if he chooses to run again in 2020, he’s with him.
