Some people hear Yanny while others hear Laurel when listening to an audio clip that’s going viral, and last night, Jimmy Kimmel jumped in on the craze.

Is it Laurel or Yanny? Let’s ask Jimmy Kimmel…

Last night on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Kimmel brought up the new Laurel vs. Yanny phenomenon that has everybody talking. A sound clip going around has a man repeating one of two words over and over. Some people hear it as Yanny, while others hear it as Laurel. For whatever reason, different people seem to hear it different ways, even though it’s the same sound.

It’s a perplexing thing, even for Kimmel. The late night host reveals that he listened to the clip on his phone for at least 25 times, and heard nothing but Yanny. He was completely sure it was Yanny. Yet as he played it again in the studio for his audience, he was now hearing Laurel. Somehow, it was only getting stranger the more people listened to it.

Kimmel then has some fun by revealing there’s a similar debate in the Jimmy Kimmel Live offices. When Guillermo says the words “joker” and “yogurt”, it’s hard to tell the difference between the two. So Kimmel has Guillermo say one of the two words, and the studio audience has to try and guest which one of the two it is. Truly, it’s no more strange than Laurel vs. Yanny…

Like many people, I hear Laurel. I’ve seen others swearing that they only hear Yanny. Who knows what the reason is behind us hearing things so differently, but what a strange phenomenon. In any case, you can catch more of Kimmel when Jimmy Kimmel Live airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. EST on ABC.
