The tree planted at the White House by Donald Trump and French president Emmanuel Macron has gone missing, and Stephen Colbert is wondering where it went.

It’s the case of the missing tree at the White House, and Stephen Colbert is on it!

Last night on The Late Show, Colbert kicked off his monologue speaking about Donald Trump and his recent visit from French president Emmanuel Macron. Apparently, Macron had given Trump an oak sapling from France, which the two were filmed planting together on the White House lawn. However, just days later, the tree had vanished, no longer in the spot it had been planted in.

So, what happened to it? He wonders if perhaps the tree wasn’t loyal enough, or if it had gotten fired by the president. But he digs a little deeper, putting together what we know about the mystery. “All we know is that this thing was yanked up by its roots in a foreign land, transplanted into the White House, and then disappeared under the cover of night,” Colbert explains. He adds, “So there’s hope for you yet, Melania!”

Colbert then discovers how the French ambassador has since claimed the tree is under quarantine. But something still seems pretty fishy to the late night funnyman. “Now they’re worried about contamination?” Colbert questions. “The tree was already in the ground! That’s like Stormy Daniels asking Donald Trump to put on a condom today!”

Next: Jimmy Kimmel will play Batman in Teen Titans Go!

If the tree is found, presumably Colbert will provide an update on his show. But something tells me that tree is probably ash by now. For what it’s worth, you can still keep up with Colbert by watching The Late Show with Stephen Colbert weeknights at 11:35 p.m. EST on CBS!
