Frasier star John Mahoney passes away at age 77
By Jeremy Dick
Character actor John Mahoney entertained us for years on the 90s sitcom Frasier, so it’s with a heavy heart that we report he passed away yesterday.
This is very sad news for anyone familiar with Frasier…
According to The Chicago Tribune, John Mahoney — who played Martin Crane on the show — has passed away at the age of 77. Though best known to the masses for his stint on the sitcom, the talented actor was also a key member of the Steppenwolf Theater ensemble. Wherever you may know Mahoney best from, his passing is certainly going to feel like a heavy loss.
Mahoney didn’t get his start in acting until his 40s, acting on the advice of John Malkovich. His natural talent and knack for performing made him a mainstay as an actor. He’d become a part of Steppenwolf for many, many years, and obviously his role on Frasier would turn him into a national celebrity. Co-starring on the show with Kelsey Grammar and David Hyde Pierce, Mahoney was arguably the funniest character of the series.
Word from the article is that Mahoney had been suffering from cancer. His battle has apparently come to a tragic end, but those closest to him can take comfort in knowing the funnyman no longer has to feel any pain. That being said, if we’re missing him this much as fans, it’s got to be very painful for those who knew him best.
