Bill Maher champions for liberal states’ rights on Real Time
By Jeremy Dick
For one of his New Rules on the new episode of Real Time, Bill Maher spoke about the power of states’ rights and how much the times have changed.
“The times, they are a-changin’…”
Last night, HBO premiered an all new episode of Real Time, and host Bill Maher as usual spoke his mind about everything going on lately. During the show, he dubbed a New Rule as it relates to the flak California is receiving recently. Namely, Governor Jerry Brown of California has been going against the federal government, with actions such as signing climate treaties with China and not enforcing Trump’s deportation rules.
Here’s the thing. As Maher explains, these angry conservatives can’t get mad about “states’ rights” — because it is, in fact, a conservative tradition. “The script has completely flipped from 50 years ago,” Maher explains. He proves the point perfectly with video footage of an Alabama governor refusing to open schoolhouse doors for black children, claiming it goes against the “states’ rights”.
Now, the white supremacists ARE the federal government, Maher says. The show is just on the other foot. “We are the rebels now!” Maher exclaims. He then gets into a fun rant in a heavily Southern accent, imagining a deep Southerner championing for liberal causes rather than conservative ones.
