On Last Week Tonight, host John Oliver took on the first family of the White House by completely destroying Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner.

Donald Trump certainly gets a lot of flak for the decisions he makes in the Oval Office. However, some pundits are insisting having his daughter Ivanka as his personal assistant balances things out.

Meanwhile, Trump has also assigned his son-in-law Jared Kushner to an insane amount of responsibilities. The Kush has been tasked with solving every American problem, from bringing peace to the middle east to revamping the entire federal government.

On last night’s Last Week Tonight, John Oliver dives into these very issues by taking on the first family. In the show’s main story, he begins by tackling the notion that Ivanka disagrees with her father on many issues. Oliver shows a clip of Gayle King pressing Ivanka on what she actually does, but all she can say is, “I think most of the impact I have over time most people will not actually know about.”

In other words, as Oliver puts it, “So we should just give her credit when good stuff happens, and blame others when bad stuff happens?”

More likely, Ivanka is just using this false assumption of her being President Trump’s counter-balance to their advantage. She admits to doing this very kind of thing in her 2009 book, with Oliver featuring an excerpt of Ivanka saying not to “go out of your way to correct a false assumption if it plays to your advantage.”

Oliver hits her husband Jared Kushner even harder in the segment. Although President Trump is assigning Kushner to revamp the entire government, he doesn’t have the credentials to suggest he’ll do much. Oliver points out that although Kushner went to Harvard, his GPA and SAT scores weren’t high enough to get him in; Kushner had only been accepted after his father donated $2.5 million to the school.

That goes against pundits’ suggestions that Kushner seems intelligent because he apparently talks very little in meetings. So it seems Kushner’s best qualification seems to be that he’s “not Steve Bannon.” But isn’t that setting the bar very, very low?

The point of all this is to keep in mind that Ivanka and Jared are not our knights in shining armor. As Oliver says in closing, if these two are the reason you’re getting sleep at night, “you should probably still be awake.”
