SNL was live coast-to-coast, which meant they needed to bring their best as far as the cold open was concerned this week.

If there’s one thing that Saturday Night Live has been able to do this season, it’s nail the cold open. The election cycle made for easy fodder and the win by Donald Trump meant weekly trolls of just about everything he does wrong.

As we’ve learned in his first 100 days, there has been a lot.

This week saw SNL go live from coast-to-coast for the first time in the show’s 42 year history — something you figured might have happened by now. Those pesky west coast markets don’t air Saturday Night Live when it airs live in New York and live in the midwest at the same time, but that  all changed tonight. That meant we expected something special with the cold open, a strength this season for the show that seems to have only gotten stronger with each passing episode.

Once again we saw the return of Alec Baldwin as Donald Trump, who trolled the lack of accomplishments in the president’s first 100 days. From the constant trips to Mar-a-lago to his inability to do anything productive, it was a roast of everything Trump. Jimmy Fallon popping up as Jared Kushner was a nice addition, and will surely be talked about around the water cooler.

Not everyone is a fan of this season of SNL, despite it being one of the best we’ve seen in a very long time. Even the most crusty of curmudgeons have to admit that the strongest part of this season has been the cold opens. Whether it has been Kate McKinnon as Jeff Sessions, Melissa McCarthy as Sean Spicer or Alec Baldwin as Trump, there has been a lot to love about the cold opens this year and the coast-to-coast live show tonight was no exception to this trend.
