16. Maher tries to round up all liberals to defeat Donald Trump
In the days leading up to the 2016 general election, Maher went on Real Time to ask a favor from all liberals. Donald Trump was getting dangerously close to winning the presidency, and this needed to be prevented. This was so important that all other liberal pet causes needed to be put on hold, at least for long enough for the left to focus all efforts on preventing a Trump win.
To prove his point, Maher even says he’ll suspend his own pet cause, cannabis legalization. For someone who has “seeds in [his] urine”, you should be able to see how serious he is. He reminds viewers that although Hillary’s chances seem good, Democrats have a history of blowing elections. Their side needed to remain focused on the most immediate threat, and it’s a mistake to assume Hillary has the election already in the bag.
Hindsight is certainly 20/20, and there are probably a lot of people out there right now wishing they had heeded Maher’s advice. But at the time, so many of them didn’t think there was any way Hillary could possibly lose to Trump. And that it was ridiculous for Maher to even suggest as much.
