Why Is It Scary: This is classic horror with a modern twist. It’s hard to watch Penny Dreadful and not think that this is what ‘The League of Gentlemen’ was supposed to be. Setting anything horror in the Victorian era is a sure fire way to class things up. The show is as theatrically appealing as it is gruesome and dark — the perfect spooky horror combo.

The Walking Dead
Year: 2009-Present
Plot: In post-apocolytic world, a group of survivors must find ways to stay alive in the midst of a zombie outbreak. Faith, loyalty and family values are all tested in a Hell On Earth scenario.
Starring: Andrew Lincoln, Norman Reedus, Melissa McBride
Why Is It Scary: It’s the zombie apocalypse — how can it not be scary? One thing that The Walking Dead has consistently done over the years is be gruesome to watch. Say what you will about the plot and the writing, but the walkers on the series never fail to be gross, deadly and scary. Having all of that grounded in a world that seems mostly real only serves to take the show to terrifying depths of horror.
