It’s Friday the 13th, which means it’s time to settle in and watch some spooky television. Today is not the day to go out and tempt fate, so the safest bet is to pop some popcorn and cuddle up on the couch to celebrate this occasion the proper way.
Don’t limit your Netflix binging to just movies that fall under the horror genre. Venture into the world of scripted television for your spooky fix and you’ll find that there are a variety of shows you’ll want to get into to satisfy that itch.

The X-Files
Year: 1994-2002; 2016
Plot: Two FBI agents — Dana Scully and Fox Mulder — must investigate cases pertaining the paranormal. Along the way, they uncover clues to a grander government conspiracy to cover up the existence of aliens.
Starring: David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson, Mitch Pileggi
Why Is It Scary: The show is a lot more scary than people will give it credit for. While it’s not gory, The X-Files was consistently suspenseful and at times terrifying with the choices for monsters. From Eugene Victor Tooms — the shape shifting cannibal — to other classic monsters like Flukeman and The Peacock Family, there are episode of the X-Files you’ll need to have the lights on for.

Stranger Things
Year: 2016-Present
Plot: When a young child disappears, his friends, mother and an eager police officer all attempt to locate him. Along the way we learn that things aren’t always what they appear and spooky things go pump in the night.
Starring: Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Millie Bobby Brown
Why Is It Scary: It’s not so much scary as it is suspenseful and intriguing. It’s a hard thing to admit when you’re a bit scared of a television show while children on said show are fearlessly wandering the woods and battling unseen paranormal evils. The atmosphere of Stranger Things is much lighter than some of the other spooky shows on this list, but there’s a foundation here upon which the setting for Friday The 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street were also laid.
