FOX is expected to have an announcement on a new season of The X-Files very soon, with an 11th season looking very likely.

It appears that we’re very close to hearing final word on the future of The X-Files revival at FOX. After a very successful revival in 2016 — one billed as the 10th season of the show — the network is expected to reveal plans for a followup.

Not only is this expected to be a continuation of the revival, but a proper new season of The X-Files.

According to EW, it appears that we are very close to an announcement one way or the other on an 11th season of The X-Files. FOX president David Madden reportedly wanted to have a reveal of a new season by tomorrow, but that’s not going to happen.

That doesn’t mean a new season of the show won’t happen, but it just means we’re going to have to wait a little longer. All signs point to the series returning in the fall of 2018, although nothing his official yet. Hearing this is intriguing, but it’s worth noting that it could also be a gateway to the new season of the show getting trapped in Development Hell. Right now it sounds like the hangup revolves around the schedules of David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson — something that helped keep the show from properly returning to the air for 14 years.

The prospects of more X-Files was pretty solid after a great run with the revival in 2016. While only six-episode in length, the revival was more of a miniseries than anything — a dose of nostalgia without going full-on with a new season. Things needed with a cliffhanger involving Fox Mulder being abducted by aliens, a loose end that sort of needs to be tied up in some way. Many thought this was the table being set for a final X-Files movie, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.

Perhaps the most interesting nugget here is that FOX wants X-Files back in proper season-length form. That’s going to be a hangup with scheduling across the board — not only with the series stars but the writing staff as well.

No matter what hurdles remain present, it appears that The X-Files will return in 2018.
