Julie Bowen (Maryland)

Baltimore native Julie Bowen is bound to be recognized by most television watchers. Sure, she’s had plenty of roles in various feature films. This includes parts in Happy Gilmore, Jumping the Broom, and Horrible Bosses. But it’s primarily her television career most fans will recognize her the best from. Chances are you’ve seen her face quite a bit over the years.

Bowen plays Carol on the series Ed; Denise Bauer on Boston Legal; and Sarah Shephard on Lost. These were all recurring roles, but none of them are the defining part of her career. That certainly goes to playing the matriarch Claire Dunphy on the sitcom Modern Family, for which she is critically acclaimed.

For her role as Claire, Bowen has seen a lot of success. She has gotten a whopping total of six nominations for the Primetime Emmy Award For Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. Of those, she has won twice. She seems to be particularly comfortable in the role, as she should, as she doesn’t make a lot of TV or film appearances otherwise these days. But considering she’s a lead character on one of the most popular shows on TV, she’s certainly a major star.
