Carol Peletier is one of the most compelling characters on the AMC zombie drama The Walking Dead. Presented as a frail and defenseless woman in the first season, Carol has since done a complete 180. She hardened up more than any other character on the series, and is now firmly one of its most popular characters. Perhaps that’s why she has already survived over twice as long as her comic book counterpart.

So why is it that Carol is so popular, considering the comic book version never amounts to anything? It’s because of her actress Melissa McBride. The extremely talented actress helps make Carol the charismatic badass that she is. The Season 4 episode “The Grove”, which sees Carol putting down someone very close to her, is proof enough of McBride’s acting prowess. The pain in her eyes really sells the horrible situation all that much more.

McBride originally hails from Lexington, Kentucky. She first started doing TV commercials in 1991, branching out into small TV and film roles from there. She would go on to act in the Stephen King-based movie The Mist, directed by Frank Darabont. Darabont liked her so much in her small role, he subsequently cast her as Carol when he developed The Walking Dead sometime later.
