24. South Park finally misses a deadline, disappoints fans

Famously, Trey Parker and Matt Stone never do South Park episodes ahead of time. Usually, they do everything for the show— from the writing to the voice acting to the animation— in one week’s time. This keeps the pressure on the team very high, but enables them to satirize very fresh topics.

Despite the strict deadline, Parker and Stone always turn in episodes on time. That is, except for the season 17 episode “Goth Kids 3: Dawn of the Posers”. A sudden power outage at South Park Studios prevented the animators from completing the episode on time. Instead, a rerun was shown in its place.

This was disappointing for fans of the series, but still understandable. After 17 years of “tempting fate”, as Trey Parker put it, it was only a matter of time. The finished episode finally aired the next week on Comedy Central.

Perhaps it was because of the late airing and higher expectations, but this episode received mixed to low reviews. Focusing solely on the goth kids of the school, a lot of critics called it disappointing. Personally, I say it’s one of the best episodes of the season.
