26. John Oliver takes down Dr. Oz’s magic pills

Mehmet Oz was once seen as a brilliant television mind and medical expert. He’s certainly got to be a smart guy based on his credentials, but maybe he took things too far when it came to pushing his miracle weight loss programs and dietary supplements. The products he has hocked have been proven to have no real health benefits at all, suggesting that money might have been his real motivation.

In a very memorable segment from Last Week Tonight, John Oliver put the doctor on blast for his supposed “miracle” cures. Oliver played many clips of Dr. Oz promoting various health products with no real medical value. Using other clips from a subcommittee hearing where Oz was mandated to testify, the doctor said he was passionate about the products he sold. Even if they didn’t have the science to back up their claims yet.

Oliver reasoned that this would be totally fine, were Dr. Oz not also promoting himself as a doctor. When people see what they believe is a medical professional advising them to try unregulated supplements with no proven benefits, it only adds to the problem. But at least Oliver helped teach a lot of people about how the daytime TV doctor is full of it.
