4. John Oliver cleans up the American sex-ed system
Nobody wants to have the infamous “birds and the bees” talk with their kids. That’s why most parents are okay with sexual education being taught to their children at a certain point in schools. It’s a good idea in theory, but as John Oliver gets into on Last Week Tonight, it’s rife with problems.
It turns out that there is no standard for sexual education in the United States. Only 22 states actually require that children receive it. And of those, only 13 require that the information taught must be “medically accurate”. This opens the door for different schools to teach the children some very different things.
“Human sexuality, unlike calculus, is something you actually need to know about for the rest of your life,” Oliver mentioned on the program. It’s perhaps one of the most important lessons of all. And it doesn’t help with schools having motivational speakers essentially screaming at teenagers to convince them to be abstinent.
To close out the entertaining segment, Oliver shows a parody PSA with guest comedians like Nick Offerman and Kristen Schaal talking to the viewers about sex. It was a funny way to show just how ridiculous the sex ed system is.
