6. John Oliver spoofs the controversy with Olympic athletes doping

Even if you don’t follow the Olympics, you’re certainly aware of the controversy with athletes “doping”. This refers to using steroids and other performance enhancing drugs to give performers an unfair advantage over their competitors. It’s a disqualifying offense for the Olympics, and those caught doping can be banned from competing in the games.

The 2016 Olympic Games brought with it rumors of Russian competitors doping to increase their performances. Athletes would take the chance of getting caught by consuming alcohol with the performance enhancing drugs, and as it would skew test results. But Russia isn’t alone. Other places like China, Jamaica, and even the good old United States of America have had athletes come under fire for suspicion of doping.

This really throws a damper on all of those inspirational stories we see for athletes in the months leading up to the big games. John Oliver used comedian Matt Walsh to do a hilarious parody of those “inspirational porn” videos, and it perfectly nails the doping controversy surrounding the Olympics. In the skit, Walsh plays a trainer encouraging a runner to stuff his body full of substances to give himself an edge.
