9. Exposing the unseen side of American drone strikes

One of the controversies surrounding Barack Obama’s presidency is his administration’s use of drones. American drone strikes occur alarmingly quite often, sometimes resulting in injuries and deaths for women and children. It’s a part of the ugliest side of war, with arguments being made on both sides whether this is something we should allow.

Leave it to John Oliver to really put things into perspective on Last Week Tonight. Oliver points out that much of the time, there’s not enough intelligence gathered on a possible target before a strike is ordered. Apparently, the definition of “immediate threat” is so loose that the United States can send pretty much use drones any time they want.

But perhaps the reason why most American citizens don’t seem to care is because it’s not happening in their own country. Using drones overseas means Americans are sheltered from the horrific violence their military is engaging in. Showing a clip from a drone strike survivor addressing congress, Last Week Tonight really stresses just how awful it is to be on the other side of these attacks. At the very least, it suggests the military needs to be more certain about their targets before attacking them.
