30 most vicious John Oliver take downs
By Jeremy Dick
John Oliver definitely doesn’t pull any punches as the host of the weekly HBO series Last Week Tonight, and we’ve taken his 30 very best take downs from the program for you to enjoy.
He may have won an Emmy for his writing on The Daily Show, but John Oliver proved himself to be just as capable of hosting when he substituted for Jon Stewart in 2013. With the gig only lasting for the summer before Stewart returned, Oliver was quickly missed. It was apparent that he needed to have his own TV show.
Fortunately, that’s when HBO stepped in to provide him with the offer for doing Last Week Tonight on their network. Presented as a half hour show airing once a week, Oliver would recount the biggest headlines since the previous episode to poke some fun at. It was as if he got to continue his The Daily Show hosting stint, but with less restrictions.
HBO has given Oliver complete creative control over the show, and it has resulted in great success. Under Oliver’s guidance, Last Week Tonight has done very well on TV and its official Youtube channels have one viral with view counts in the multiple millions. Left to his own devices, Oliver can take corporations down like no other, and here are his 30 best examples.
30. John Oliver takes down Youtube conspiracy videos
There are some absolutely insane conspiracy theories which have been presented on Youtube. As John Oliver mentioned on Last Week Tonight‘s web exclusive on the subject, they can be downright baffling. This includes a theory that the Illuminati designed the Denver airport and another which states that JonBenet Ramsey and Katy Perry are, in fact, the same person.
And that’s just the tip of the iceberg (speaking of which, Cthulhu caused the sinking of the Titanic).
So Oliver came up with an entertaining way of satirizing these silly videos. He thought he would come up with his own outlandish conspiracy video and see what happens. The random subject he chose to do a “conspiracy” video about? Cadbury Creme Eggs.
Oliver mentions how the average Cadbury Creme Egg weighs 34 grams, which is also the “same number of streets” in the Christmas movie Miracle on 34th Street. From there, one unrelated thing leads to another, resulting in a picture of a Cadbury Creme Egg as the Illuminati Eye in a triangle. The tangent sounded an awful lot like other Youtube conspiracy videos, but the subject matter in this spoof really makes it obvious how ridiculous they all sound.
