19. Hillary Clinton catches up to Sri Lanka

A lot of Americans are excited about Hillary Clinton’s campaign, as it just might see the country’s very first woman elected to be president. Truly, the occasion would be historic and something that has been a long time coming. Especially when you look elsewhere in the world.

On The Late Show, Stephen Colbert covered the Democratic National Convention every step of the way. On the second day, he spoke about how Hillary broke the “glass wall” with her nomination, and will be able to make history again by winning the general election. But while she might be the first in the country, she is far from the first on the planet.

To put it bluntly, Colbert delivered this joke when talking about Hillary’s potential big win as president:

“This means Hillary Clinton could be the first female president, and America will finally catch up with 1960 Sri Lanka.”

The joke refers to Sirimova Bandaranaike, who became the prime minister of Sri Lanka in 1960 following the death of her husband who held the position the year prior. Clinton’s big win would still be historic, it just wouldn’t exactly be the very first of its type.
