21. Stewart explains Michael Steele’s gig as RNC chairman

In the aftermath of Barack Obama winning the 2008 presidential election, the Republicans didn’t want to look like they were no longer cool. Perhaps that’s why Michael Steele earned the chairmanship for the Republican party soon afterward, as the counter to the Democrats having the first black president.

Steele made history by being the first African-American head of the Republican party, though that certainly wasn’t without controversy. Many conservatives like Rush Limbaugh openly criticized putting Steele in that position of power from the very start, while on the other side, Jon Stewart took to The Daily Show to laugh at how much the whole move reeked of desperation.

Here’s the perfect way Stewart summarized Steele gaining his new position:

“Republicans, I appreciate what you’re trying to do here. He’s your voice of change, your Barack Obama, but it’s not as simple as that. I know you want to take this fight to the Democrats, but Michael Steele, he’s like… remember when your kid really wanted a Tickle Me Elmo for Christmas, but all the stores were sold out so you went to Chinatown and got him a Giggle-Time All-Mo? Michael Steele is the Republican Party’s Giggle-Time All-Mo.”
