22. Stewart blasts Mike Pence for LGBT discrimination

While most of us probably had no idea who Mike Pence was before Donald Trump chose him to be his presidential running mate, but the governor of Indiana has been in headlines before for his stance against the rights of those in the LGBT community. In 2015, he was spearheading a drive to pass laws which would give business owners the right to deny their services to all gay customers.

The move was done under the guise of “religious freedom”, with Pence taking the time to take photographs with rabbis and nuns to make himself look like the good guy. He insisted that he was only respecting “religious freedoms” and that he is totally pro-gay. Pence claimed that “Hoosiers don’t discriminate” and that they’re the most welcoming and hospitable people in America.

Public scrutiny did force him to change the wording in his legislation, however, so that it would no longer give store owners the right to deny gay people. On The Daily Show, Stewart poked fun at Pence’s 180 on the issue, phrasing it in this eloquent fashion:

“I’d like to believe that the change in language came via a moral epiphany, but my guess is, it’s more of a, ‘And I would’ve gotten away with it too, if it weren’t for you meddling kids!'”
