8. Bill Swerski’s Super Fans

In Chicago, it’s forever 1985, and that was never more apparent than in the SNL sketch Bill Swerski’s Super Fans starring Joe Mantegna, Chris Farley, Mike Myers, and Robert Smigel, who’s best known for Triumph the Insult Comic Dog. They appropriated the term “Da Bears” while they paid tribute to their Super Bowl winning coach Mike Ditka by smoking a cigar.

Since the fans are all morbidly obese, having heart attacks are common for them. They would also predict the score of games, although it would often be a blowout. In the Thanksgiving dinner, Macaulay Culkin and his brother make an appearance and predict a 96-14 score for the Bears at halftime. And when they say grace (or “Da Prayer”) they make sure to praise Mike Ditka and God.

Even though their accent may sound like it’s closer to Boston, the obsession that the actors portray is on point. The sketch was so popular that both Ditka and Michael Jordan appeared on the show once. But after a two-year run, the sketch went away once Ditka left the Bears and casting changes occurred, but the Super Fans reunited after the Bulls’ first three-peat.

All of the cast members do a great job, but Farley’s the one who steals the spotlight. As a Chicago native, Farley knows what it’s like to obsess over the Chicago Bears and Bulls. During their Thanksgiving dinner, Farley started choking after eating an entire pork chop. And when he nearly cheats on his wife, he remembers that she’s a super fan too, and that she’s his Ditka.

Practically every team’s fans can identify with Bill Swerski’s Super Fans, especially when they win a championship and do everything they can to hang on to it. And even people who hate “Da Bears” and “Da Bulls” can’t help but quote SNL when referring to them.
