9. El Nino

Usually, when people think of weather segments on news channels, scantily clad women pointing at a green screen is what comes to mind. But Chris Farley is an actor who defies regular conventions, and that was never more apparent than when he dressed up as the tropical storm El Nino.

In real life, El Nino refers to a storm that wreaks havoc on the Pacific Rim. It is formed due to irregular wind patterns. When the air pressure is high, and the sea temperature is warm, it is referred to as El Nino. When the temperature cools and the air pressure drops, it is called La Nina.

It’s a pretty complicated concept to grasp if you’re not a meteorologist, which is why Chris Farley does a great job of simplifying it for us. Essentially, the message he’s trying to get across is that it’s very dangerous, and most importantly, it’s Spanish. The line “El Nino is Spanish for… The Nino” has become one of the most quoted lines in SNL’s history.

Farley did his part to bring the oft-understated tropical storm into the mainstream, and ever since then, plenty of athletes have embraced the name hoping that it will make them as intimidating as Chris Farley was when he pretended to be El Nino. Sergio Garcia, Fernando Torres, Hanley Ramirez, Nino Niederreiter, and Gilbert Melendez have adopted El Nino as a nickname, and all have tried their best to make other players in their respective sports bow to them.
