Julia Sweeney (Washington)

Julia Sweeney was raised in Spokane, Washington, and later earned her degree at the University of Washington. Soon after, she moved to Los Angeles to work as an accountant for United Artists and Columbia Pictures. But Sweeney had a lot more to offer beyond helping with the numbers behind the scenes.

Sweeney took comedy classes and starting performing with The Groundlings comedy troupe, and would be noticed by Lorne Michaels while doing comedy for them. She was cast on Saturday Night Live as a featured player, joining the main cast the next year, and serving four full seasons on the show from 1990 to 1994.

The comedian’s most notable impression would be Chelsea Clinton, if only because it enraged her mother Hillary so much she sent the studio a scathing letter for doing the skit. But Sweeney’s most popular character, of course, would be Pat, a nerd whose gender was unidentifiable to anyone who didn’t know him or her. The sketches would later be adapted into the feature film It’s Pat, which is much funnier than you’d expect and has since gained a cult following.

Sweeney still works in comedy and provided voices in the 2013 animated film Monsters University.
